Why do you need an electrical certificate?
An electrical certificate is proof that the electrical devices and wiring on your property is safe. Beyond peace of mind, this is also an essential consideration if you have decided to lease your property to tenants or sell it on to prospective buyers.
How do you get an electrical certificate?
The good news for you as the client is that you shouldn’t have to take any action to get your hands on your certificate after the work is complete. In accordance with electrical safety laws, the electrical contractor performing the work must issue the certificate or testing and compliance (for electrical installations) or safety (for electrical equipment). You should be given an electrical certificate each time a contractor installs or works on a piece of electrical equipment on your property.
It’s also worth noting that electricians are legally required to retain copies of all electrical certificates for at least five years after each service is performed – and while there is no rule as to how long the client must retain their copy of the certificate, they can be useful reference points when dealing with future contractors or electrical problems.
What information is included on electrical certificates?
Essentially, electrical safety certificates confirm that any electrical work carried out at your property has been done by a licensed electrician
