Industrial bakery electrical system upgrade.
Ben and Mark

Byrd Electrical delivered a comprehensive industrial electrical solution for a bakery in Tullamarine, ensuring seamless operations and compliance with strict industry standards.

What Work Was Completed

Industrial kitchens, like the one in Tullamarine, require precise attention to electrical wiring due to their unique power demands and safety requirements. This project called for a three-phase installation, powering two industrial ovens (each drawing over 70 amps), single and three-phase pendant outlets, recessed food-grade lighting, exit and emergency lighting, a cool room, and a grease trap with pump and overflow alarm.

Given the additional power needs, we worked closely with the local supply authority to upgrade the street transformer, ensuring the bakery’s electrical system could handle the increased load. This collaboration was crucial to delivering a reliable power solution for the client.

The Approach

Creating the right environment for the baking process was key, and that meant designing an optimal electrical layout for all equipment. Strategic placement of outlets determined where the biscuit-making machinery would operate, ensuring smooth workflow for bakers.

Lighting was critical for meeting food preparation standards, so we worked with local lighting suppliers to install food-safe, high-visibility fixtures. Proper voltage to each outlet was essential to ensure smooth daily operations and maintain consistent production.

Optimising Electrical Layouts for Industrial Spaces

In Tullamarine’s industrial sector, optimising electrical layouts is critical for compliance with Australian standards and ensuring seamless operations:

  • Strategic Placement of Power Outlets and Switchgear: Correctly positioned power outlets and switchgear, including RCDs (Residual Current Devices) and circuit breakers, ensure industrial machinery operates efficiently without power interruptions.
  • Load Balancing via Distribution Boards: Proper load balancing across distribution boards prevents circuit overloads, improves equipment reliability, and reduces the risk of tripped circuits or downtime.
  • Compliance with Local and National Electrical Standards: Adherence to Australian standards like AS/NZS 3000 and proper installation of safety devices such as surge protection and fault detection systems ensure compliance with local regulations in areas like Brimbank and Hume.
  • Future-Proofing with Scalable Electrical Systems: Scalable systems, such as modular switchboards and flexible cable trays, allow for easy upgrades to meet increasing power demands as industrial facilities in Tullamarine expand.

Advanced Power Solutions for High-Demand Environments

Handling high electrical loads in Tullamarine’s industrial spaces requires advanced power solutions:

  • Three-Phase Power Distribution: Installing three-phase power circuits with appropriately rated circuit breakers and isolation switches ensures consistent energy supply to high-demand machinery like industrial ovens and conveyor systems.
  • LED High Bay and Task Lighting: Energy-efficient LED high bay lighting, paired with control systems like dimmers or motion sensors, reduces operational costs and meets the lighting standards required for industrial safety compliance.
  • Advanced Power Distribution via MCCs (Motor Control Centres): Motor Control Centres streamline power distribution to machinery, allowing for centralised control of motor-driven equipment, which is essential for managing large-scale industrial processes.
  • Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and Backup Generators: Installing UPS systems alongside automatic transfer switches (ATS) for generators ensures continuous power supply during grid outages, protecting sensitive equipment and maintaining productivity in Tullamarine’s industrial environments.

The End Result

A fully-operational baking facility, thoughtfully designed with ample space and precision, ensuring optimal efficiency and seamless production.

Is Wi-Fi Really Enough or Do You Need Data Cabling?

Wi-Fi alone is often not enough for a Melbourne home with brick walls, multiple floors, or several people working from home. Data cabling provides a dedicated wired connection to each room, delivering faster, more stable speeds than Wi-Fi alone can provide. Standard Wi-Fi struggles most in Melbourne’s double-brick homes, common

I had a tricky power outage which seemed to be a mystery. I contacted Byrd Electrical and Mark and Lionel arrived promptly, got straight to work and diagnosed the problem incredibly quickly. What could have been a drawn out and stressful ordeal was resolved in a remarkably short time. Not only did they fix the issue but they took the time to explain. They were professional, kind and clearly knew their stuff. They had a ‘can do’ attitude. I would not hesitate to recommend Mark and Lionel to anyone needing electrical work. They were a pleasure to deal with.
From my initial enquiry, to quote, to setting a date and installation itself the communication was excellent from all the team involved. When the first heating element proved not suitable for me, Mark immediately tried to find me an alternative solution so they could complete the job same day. He spent time looking for ideas that would work in my bathroom space and came up with what is now perfect solution as I have heat and light without needing to turn on the exhaust fan every time. Mark and Lionel worked efficiently to install ceiling heater lights and I would never know it wasn’t part of the original bathrooms. They were easy to chat with and they also clean up afterwards 😊. Highly recommend.
The guys were great - cleaned up everything and all was good! And they're back today, doing more work to keep me warm. Rapt.
